Ultrasonographically Guided Percutaneous Pancreatic Ductography

Abstract

Using a real-time transducer to guide a thin needle for puncture, both percutaneous pancreatic ductography and percutaneous aspiration biopsy of the pancreas were successfully performed as a single procedure in a 55-year-old male patient with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas associated with adenoma of the stomach. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was attemped prior to the above procedure but failed due to stenosis of the duodenum. There were no complications, and the examination provided a definite diagnosis. Ultrasonographically guided percutaneous pancreatic ductography is considered to be a valuable method to diagnose patients with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas in whom ERCP failed to visualize the pancreatic duct.
